Getting started

Install the app, create the metafields the blocks expect, and add your first spec table.

Batten Spec Tables reads metafields you already have. If your product data is not in metafields yet, create the definitions first, then add a block in the theme editor and point it at the namespace and key.

1. Install

Install the app from the Shopify App Store. On install the app registers a theme app extension, which is what puts the blocks in the theme editor. Nothing is written into your theme files at any point.

2. Create the custom data

Go to Settings, Custom data in the Shopify admin. The namespaces and keys below are the defaults shipped in the block settings, so using them means no retyping later.

Metaobject definitions

  • spec_sheet: material (single line text), weight (weight).
  • spec_row: label, value, unit, all single line text.
  • faq_row: title (single line text), content (rich text).
  • nutrition_panel: serving_size, servings_per_container, calories (single line text), nutrients (metaobject reference, list of values, to nutrient_row), footnote (multi line text).
  • nutrient_row: name, amount, daily_value (single line text), indented (true or false).
  • badge: label (single line text), icon (file), caption (single line text).
  • document: name (single line text), file (file), file_size (single line text).

You do not need all of them. Create the ones for the blocks you plan to use.

3. Add a block

Open Online Store, Themes, Customize. On the product template choose Add block, then Apps. The blocks appear under the app name. On the Free plan only Spec table is listed, which is the plan gate rather than a fault.

The app home page also carries a deep link per block that opens the theme editor with that block already added to the main product section.

4. Fill in one product and check the storefront

Populate one product with values, save, then open that product on the storefront rather than only in the editor preview. A weight metafield should render as a number followed by its unit, for example 1.4 kg. If it renders as raw JSON, the metafield type is not the one the block expects.

What renders where

Every block works on product, collection, and page templates in any Online Store 2.0 theme. Product, variant, collection, and shop metafields are all readable. Blocks inherit the theme's fonts and line height unless you override color, width, or spacing in the block settings.
