Getting started

Install the plugin, connect a project, gate your first page, and invite your first member.

Batten Members takes about five minutes to set up. Connect a project, drop two components on the canvas, gate a page, invite yourself, and publish.

1. Install and open the plugin

Install Members from the Framer Marketplace, then open it from the plugin menu in the Framer toolbar. The plugin runs inside the editor, in a panel beside your canvas.

2. Connect a project

On the Connect screen, choose Create a project and give it a name. Only you see the name. You can add an email address if you want us to be able to reach you about the project, and it is never shown to your members.

Creating the project generates two keys and saves them into this Framer project for you:

KeyWhere it livesWhat it can do
Publishable keyInside the components on your published siteAsk whether the current visitor may see a page, and start a sign in
Secret keyIn the Framer editor only, never on the published siteManage gates, members, plans, and your licence

The secret key is shown once, when the project is created. Keep a copy somewhere safe. We store only a one way digest of it, so we cannot show it to you again and a copy of our database does not hand anyone your project.

3. Add the login form

Open the Components tab and insert Login form onto your sign in page. Its service URL and publishable key are filled in for you.

Select it on the canvas and open Framer's right hand panel to set the label, the button text, colors, radius, padding, and spacing. It is a normal code component, so it inherits your site's look as much as you want it to.

4. Gate the content

Two ways to protect something, and most sites use both.

A whole page. Open the Gated pages tab. Every page in the project is listed. Set the page to one of three modes:

ModeWho gets in
PublicEveryone
Members onlyAnyone signed in
One plan onlySigned in members carrying the plan you pick

A section inside a page. Insert the Member gate component from the Components tab and drop the protected content inside it. Set Fallback to whatever a signed out visitor should see instead, or turn Redirect on and point it at your sign in page.

On the canvas a member gate always renders its children, so the section stays editable while you design. The gate applies in Preview and on the published site.

5. Create plans, if you need them

Plans are labels you assign, for example basic and pro. Create them in the plugin, then use them either to gate a page with One plan only, or to sort your members list.

Plans are matched exactly. A page that requires pro admits members on pro and nobody else, so a member on a higher plan does not get in automatically. If you want tiers to nest, give the same member both plans for now.

6. Invite your first member

Open the Members tab, invite yourself by email, and optionally set a name and a plan. Membership is invite led: a visitor who is not on your list can type their address into the login form all day and no link is ever sent, and the form says the same thing either way so your member list cannot be probed from the outside.

7. Publish and try it

Publish the site, open your sign in page, request a link, and follow it from your inbox. You land back on the site signed in.

A sign in lasts about an hour, after which the member requests a new link. There is no password to choose and none to reset.

Removing someone

Use Revoke on the Members tab. Access ends on that member's next page load rather than whenever their current token happens to expire. The row stays in your list marked revoked, so you can see who was removed and when. Ask us if you want a member's record deleted outright.

What the free tier covers

One gated page, twenty five members, and as many plans as you like. That is enough to build a real flow and launch a small site. The pricing page explains what Pro adds and how the licence key works.

Opening a page back up to the public is always allowed, even when a project is over its limit, so you can never get stuck.

Add and remove components later

Insert new components any time from the Components tab. Removing a component from a page removes it from the published site.

Disconnecting a project, or uninstalling the plugin, clears the keys out of the Framer editor. It does not delete your project, your members, your plans, or your gates, and a published site keeps working. Reconnecting needs the secret key, which is the other reason to keep a copy of it.

Still stuck? Send it through the support form and you will have a reply inside two business days.
